Electronically augmented children’s books have existed for over two decades, and commonly respond with a discrete event: a touch selects a pre-authored sound, which plays to its end regardless of what the hand does next. This project asks what such a book would be like if sound instead followed the hand continuously. We designed and built prototypes of an interactive textured book with a fur-covered, touch- and pressure-sensitive page. A custom granular synthesizer can produce sound mapped either continuously from the position and movement of an ongoing touch, or as a discrete event triggered by individual touches. The prototype is being used to evaluate continuous versus discrete control mapping strategies.
